Tacony’s Iatarola to be honored on Friday

Lou Iatarola (left) is happy to report on several improvements to Tacony this year. One major change has been the construction of a new ramp to I-95 South.

Tacony’s Louis M. Iatarola will receive the Historical Society of Pennsylvania’s History in Pennsylvania Volunteer of the Year award on Friday during a luncheon at the Union League.

Iatarola will share the award with Nancy Roan, a Montgomery County woman who has been teaching German folk arts and crafts to young people for more than 40 years.

Susan Corbett, the first lady of Pennsylvania, will be the keynote speaker.

Iatarola was nominated by Jack McCarthy, an archivist, historical consultant and project director for the Northeast Philadelphia Hall of Fame.

“I can’t think of anyone more deserving of the inaugural History in Pennsylvania Volunteer of the Year award than Lou Iatarola,” he said. “His contributions over the last twenty years have been really far ranging. From producing the annual Tacony History Day parade, to working with Preservation Alliance and the University of Pennsylvania on historic preservation projects and a historic district nomination for Tacony, to writing books, to managing the Tacony Historical Society’s programs and collections, the extent of his efforts on behalf of local history are really amazing.” ••
